La moda puede ser muchas cosas: elegante, estructurada, predecible. Pero desde la visión de Gualti, la moda es energía pura. Aquí no son solo pren- das, son sensaciones. No son telas, son corrientes de aire atrapadas en movi- miento. No son diseños, son emociones en estado puro.
Desde su atelier en Venecia, Gualti no sigue reglas, las desafía. Su trabajo no cabe en etiquetas ni en categorías conocidas. ¿Minimalismo? No, gracias. Que viva el dramatismo, la fluidez y una buena dosis de magia. Sus piezas no se visten, se fusionan con el cuerpo. Anillos que parecen tatuajes líquidos, co- llares que flotan como si tuvieran vida propia, brazaletes que no abrazan la muñeca, la envuelven en un baile hipnótico.
Y sus prendas… Son movimiento. La organza se retuerce, se expande, respi- ra contigo. Los volúmenes no se quedan quietos, flotan, vibran, se sacuden con cada paso. Cada capa de tela es un trazo de arte tridimencional, cada si- lueta parece desafiar la gravedad. Es como si el viento se hubiera quedado atrapado en la tela y se negará a soltarla.
Aquí no hay estructuras rígidas ni líneas predecibles. Sus diseños existen en un punto intermedio entre el sueño y la realidad.
Sus piezas no están hechas para ser vistas, están hechas para sentirse. Un Gualti no se usa, te envuelve.

Una wunderkammer nel cuore di Venezia, a Santa Margherita, uno spazio emozionale bianco dove l’occhio vaga tra armonie di colori con la sensazione che le creazioni in mostra siano talmente leggere da fluttuare nell’aria. È il mondo di Gualti.

Gualti è il nome d’arte di Gualtiero Salbego, quarantottenne, veneziano di adozione che trascorre la sua infanzia e adolescenza in un paese di campagna nei pressi di Padova. Lì passa ore a contemplare i dettagli nel mondo naturale che parlano di micro movimenti, crescite impercettibili, sfumature, sussurri e ondeggiamenti silenziosi. Piccoli fossili, rami di arbusti, sassi, e soprattutto radici, diventano per Gualti le forme antropomorfe della natura che tanto lo affascinano e che lui lascia sedimentare nella sua memoria.

Oggi, il ricordo del lento pulsare della vita rurale unito ad un fermento creativo in costante crescita portano alla realizzazione di gioielli dallo stile inconfondibile, creazioni contemporanee che di inanimato hanno solo il materiale di cui sono fatte. Nylon, resine sintetiche, frammenti di alluminio, acrilico e vetro si intrecciano, si fondono e diventano spille, anelli, orecchini, bracciali, collane, diademi, pezzi unici che Gualti stesso ama definire “architetture senza tempo”, eleganti e leggiadre.

Un impeto creativo che non si ferma agli accessori ma dona vita anche ai tessuti: come bozzoli di crisalide, taffetà, seta, organza e lana cotta assumono le forme di sciarpe, stole e giacche che avvolgono chi le indossa con un’eleganza dal grande impatto.

Indossare un accessorio di Gualti significa entrare in sintonia con una dimensione eterea in cui profonde pulsioni artistiche si sono fuse con l’osservazione del mondo naturale nei suoi aspetti più armoniosi e delicati. Quel che ne nasce è un oggetto prezioso e unico, e l’effetto che fa una volta indossato è di improvvisa luminosità, come uno sbuffo di luce che rallegra.

Dall’atelier di S. Margherita al mondo: le creazioni di Gualti attraversano gli oceani e fanno bella mostra di sé al collo di musiciste e cantanti liriche, illuminando lo sguardo di donne fascinose che portano con sé un pezzo di Venezia.

Arte a Venezia: Gualti e le sue creazioni
Quando la creatività diventa arte da indossare
Desideriamo presentarvi un artista di eccezione, che ha scelto Venezia, o forse da Venezia è stato scelto, per esprimere tutta la sua creatività in opere d’arte uniche, da indossare come gioielli.
Durante una delle nostre visite guidate a Venezia potrebbe proprio capitare di passare davanti al suo atelier, ed una sosta per ammirare tanta bellezza è d’obbligo.
Carissimi ospiti, ecco a voi Gualti!

Un’infanzia difficile
Gualti nasce nei pressi di Padova e fin dalla prima infanzia dimostra una spiccata predisposizione artistica, unita ad una sensibilità unica, tanto che se ne accorge persino la sua maestra d’asilo. Ama sedersi per terra, toccare i sassi, sradicare piantine e fiori per osservarne l’essenza più nascosta, le radici.
Da grande, dice, farà l’artista, ma forse non è ancora perfettamente consapevole della grandezza del suo sogno.
Pur riconoscendo le sue doti particolari, la famiglia non lo sostiene nel suo desiderio più profondo, e a tredici anni Gualti viene mandato a lavorare in un laboratorio di ceramiche artistiche. Certo, la sua sete di arte è in parte appagata, ma l’ambiente è chiuso, gli toglie il respiro, e Gualti si sente in gabbia. Trova una via di fuga in un laboratorio in cui si reca dopo il lavoro per creare le sue opere, in particolare gioielli, di ceramica, ma anche di legno, di metallo… A casa invece crea opere d’arte con gli oggetti di uso più comune, come le posate, che pinza, piega e attorciglia: è il suo modo per conferire eternità a ciò che spesso diamo per scontato.
Continua incessantemente anche a dipingere, si occupa di fotografia, ascolta musica…
E comincia una incessante ricerca di materiali originali con cui esprimere la propria creatività: materiali inusuali, mischiati, fusi, sperimentati come in nuove magiche alchimie, resine sintetiche, fili di nylon, frammenti di alluminio, sfere di vetro incastonate, perle di vetro e di cristallo…

La redenzione: Venezia
Dopo undici anni, e dopo l’ennesima dimostrazione di chiusura mentale, Gualti dice basta e si licenzia. Disposto davvero a fare qualunque lavoro, risponde per caso ad un annuncio di una ditta di Mestre che cerca artisti. Al telefono esita, ha voglia di provare ma non sa se sarà all’altezza… dall’altro capo del telefono la voce energica di una donna gli dice che non ha tempo da perdere e che lo aspetta il giorno dopo per tre giornate di prova.
A Mestre gli si presenta la Signora Marisa, una donna caparbia, quasi mascolina, ma dalla sensibilità fuori dal comune. Marisa capisce al volo che Gualti farebbe al caso suo, ma comprende anche che il giovane ha ben altre potenzialità. Gli mette in mano un biglietto dell’autobus per Venezia e gli dice di trovare la sua strada proprio lì.
Gualti non è mai stato a Venezia prima di allora. Ed è amore a prima vista. Passeggia, osserva, si perde… sale sul Ponte dei Pugni, a Dorsoduro, e capisce: quel luogo gli sta dicendo qualcosa, lo sta chiamando.
La Signora Marisa gliel’ha detto che avrebbe riconosciuto il suo luogo magico appena l’avesse visto. La nuova avventura di Gualti comincia da qui. Se gli angeli custodi esistono, quello del giovane Gualti di sicuro si chiama Marisa.

La nuova avventura: i gioielli di Gualti a Venezia
È il 13 settembre 1998: Gualti apre il suo primo piccolissimo negozio dove espone le sue magiche creazioni. È un trionfo! Venezia e la sua gente lo accolgono con entusiasmo. Le trasparenze, i riflessi, i colori dei suoi gioielli rispecchiano Venezia, sembrano catturare l’essenza stessa della nostra magica città. La tenacia, la caparbietà, l’impegno alla fine sono stati premiati.
Assieme ai gioielli si stagliano nel bianco delle pareti anche sciarpe e stole: sembrano sculture, morbide e rigide allo stesso tempo. Quelle ondulate ricordano l’acqua e le alghe dei canali, della laguna… altro connubio perfetto.

I gioielli d’arte di Gualti oggi
Chi entra oggi nel suo negozio trova un uomo che veste di nero, in modo sobrio: non ha bisogno di far emergere la propria personalità indossando capi di abbigliamento particolari, poiché tutta la sua personalità viene esaltata dai gioielli che espone nel nuovo negozio, dall’altro lato del Ponte dei Pugni.
Qualcuno l’ha definito un alchimista, che con pozioni ed ingredienti segreti fa esplodere i colori in creazioni uniche.
Ed è il colore il vero protagonista della sua arte, quel colore che del resto è anche una delle caratteristiche principali di Venezia.
I suoi gioielli sono sempre ispirati ai fiori, alle alghe, alle bellezze della natura… lasciamo a loro le ultime battute di questo post, dal momento che sono più eloquenti di qualsiasi parola.
Se, come dice Dostoevskij, “la bellezza salverà il mondo”, un piccolo grande merito spetterà anche a Gualti.
Noi vi aspettiamo per una delle nostre visite guidate di Venezia: sarà per noi un onore portarvi alla scoperta di una Venezia incantevolmente vera, fatta anche e soprattutto di persone meravigliose e di artisti unici.

” GUALTI’S DREAMY FAIRY TALE “

Graceful and flexible as a leaf of grass, light and evanescent as a floating bubble (he loves this similarity!), Gualtiero Salbego set foot in Venice, for the first time ever, in 1998, and since then he never left. At that time he was 26, and probably too shy to imagine his brilliant future as one of the finest artists in town.
Born and raised in a small village of Veneto countryside, Gualtiero lived in a family that considered job as a primary source and sent him to work right after the secondary school.
Artistically inclined, he got a job as a ceramist and spent the following 11 years employed in a factory where he couldn’t nurture his passion as he should have.
Still, in the spare time the boy used to work on various, personal creations, drawn and inspired by the nature around him. Extremely fascinated by features of the earth such as leaves, roots, branches, fragile filaments, striped barks, fossils and stones, he was also mesmerized by any water creatures: colorful anemones and meandering algae became part of his vivid imagination and endless creativity.
Tired of keeping his restless soul in captivity and frustrated by his limiting job, with a big effort Gualtiero decided to go against his parents’ will and discover his own life path. A few months later his revolutionary breakthrough, he was arranging his first lab in Venice: a 9 square meters of freedom and grace.
Nowadays, entering Gualti’s atelier-gallery it’s like walking into a white, fabolous Wunderkammer, where atypical jewels, along with fabric garnishments, are displayed in harmony with selected music and particular scents.
The artist thinks that these objects, being inspired by nature and destined to nature, should be chosen as instinctive extensions of the human body.
He believes his place, adorned with creations made of unusual materials such as synthetic resin, Swarovski crystal, nylon and aluminium, should be a souls’ meeting point. As a matter of fact, light and transparent, yet extraordinary resilient, these objects evoke the substance of the soul, which is aerial and unbreakable.
Jewels and accessories (although he hates this word, as none of his creations should be considered a complement, but an emotion!) can be customized according to the body and the personality of the client, who rarely leaves the atelier as a stranger. Surprised as I was, feeling the uncommon energy spread all over the place, I now just guess Gualti’s deepest secret resides in his short statement:
“I feel blessed, since my job gave me the opportunity to live a fairy tale and turn to be what I was as a child”. A free, transparent, perfect creature.

Im realen Leben ist er ein bescheidener, fast schüchterner Mann, der erst im Gespräch über seine Kunst so richtig in Fahrt kommt. Was er macht, sind realisierte Träume, aus
vibrierendem Fiberglas und Glitzersteinen. Daraus entstehen Ringe, Broschen, Haarschmuck, Armbänder und Halsketten. Oder auch aus plissierten Stoffen Schals und Jacken, die aus jeder Frau eine Madonna oder eine Herzogin ma- chen. Sie erinnert an die Zeiten, als noch Dogen herrschten und die adeligen Damen in ihren kostbaren Roben das Bild einer glanzvollen Stadt reflektierten.

Per le calli si può girare all’infinito, eppure qualcosa di sconosciuto resta sempre. Lo sa chi viene a Venezia di tanto in tanto ma anche chi, in questa città, ci vive da quando è nato. Incontrare Gualtiero Salbego è un’esperienza che colpisce profondamente. La sua è una favola bellissima, intensa e toccante. È il sogno che si fa realtà, è la passione che vince tutte le paure e gli ostacoli. Quattordici anni fa Gualti, questo il suo nome d’arte, si trasferisce a Venezia e da allora la sua creatività non ha più avuto limiti. L’atelier che porta il suo nome è un luogo che trascende lo spazio e il tempo, un luogo dell’anima dove le sue meravigliose creazioni prendono vita. Le opere di Gualti vivono sulla donna che le indossa, ed è qui che sta la sorpresa. L´apparente fragilità dei gioielli si scopre essere un’illusione: tutto è pensato per essere indossato. I materiali particolarissimi spaziano dalle resine sintetiche mescolate fra loro all’alluminio colorato. Bracciali, anelli, orecchini, collari, headpiece, diventano così estensioni del corpo. Ma ci sono anche stole in materiali pregiati: sete, organze, taffetà, e tutto ciò che può avvolgere il corpo di donna. È proprio così: Gualti, sculture da indossare.

Travel Material: From Venice to New York

visceral approach to material experimentation. George Beylerian witnessed this first hand during his travels to the 53rd Venice Biennale earlier this year. He reports from Venice on the spectacular forms he discovered by two artists, GUALTI and Federica Marangoni, whose passion for materials drives their respective bodies of work in very different ways.

GUALTI: Shoots of Light
In the heart of Dorsoduro is a white jewel box – hardly a 12′ x 12′ space, filled with the most delicate, attractive jewels of body ornaments. These jewels, however, are not made of gold or gemstones; they are actually made by the magical hands of GUALTI (Guatiero Salbergo) fashioned from nylon filament threads-resin acts as his “basic material”. The result is pure magic! The ornaments are collar wraps, from small to extravagant, collar and wristbands that flutter into graceful and butterfly shapes, pleated and delicate in vibrant colors. Resin acts as his ‘base’ with nylon filament threads which reflect his childhood memories of pulling out roots from the soil as artforms. He
creates “shoots of Light” as extension of the body. The sensibility in his fingers indicate childhood and adolescence work experience, when at 13, he started work in a laboratory of an artist/ ceramist in Capodimonte. At 18 he developed a passion for wearables, always manipulating shapes, curves and playing with “elasticity” as the extension of his craft. He explains that his work is not fashion, but art. His “expressive needs” are mirrored in his work through form and color. In other words GUALTI creates magic through his sense of color, shapes, curves, forms and the subtlety of it all! A true magician of shapes and colors!

Le creazioni veneziane di Gualti conquistano la Florida

Gioielli, emozioni che giocano con le linee e la luce, creature diafane fluttuanti e leggere che avvolgono il corpo, bracciali, orecchini, spille, gorgiere: scenografiche sculture da indossare. Il senso di leggerezza aleggia in tutta l’opera di Gualti, giovane artista capace di creare oggetti magici con la materia impalpabile delle sue resine, il vetro, i piccoli cristalli tenuti insieme da fili di nylon trasparenti, che per mezzo di sottili alchimie si ricollegano con le piume e i tessuti attraverso le vie contorte fra l’ordine e il disordine..

Gualti, a designer specializing in jewelry and body ornaments, describe what they produce as extensions of the body, offshoots of the wearer’s personality. Gualti’s work embodies all the lightness and delicacy of Venetian glass, yet is soft and pliable to the touch.

“I’ve found that I can get a variety of different synthetic resins to capture and reflect light, and to move gently like tendrils in the breeze,” Gaulti said. “I also use glass beads in my compositions, and tiny fragments of flexible laminates that accentuate the impression of movement.”
Self-taught, Gualti has been experimenting with the expressive potential of all sorts of materials since he was a child. This aptitude placed him at odds with his farming family in the hinterland of Padua. Rather than have him go to art school, they had him apprenticed at the age of 14 to a ceramicist.
“In my free time, when I wasn’t drawing I was setting off on expeditions to find beautiful things,” Gualti said. “Roots were a particular passion. I think that’s where the undulating filigree of my designs comes from. A small band of much younger children used to trot along with me and we would display our discoveries on a white sheet. My father and grandfather thought there was something wrong with me. They wanted a son with manly pursuits.”
By the time he was out of his teens, Gualti knew he had to move away. He applied for a job doing fresco work in Mestre, on the mainland. During a trial period using what was for him a new medium, his inventiveness and eye for detail so impressed the owner that she persuaded him to show her the sculptures he had been making at home.
Gualti’s workshop and store (Dorsoduro 3111, Rio Terà Canal; tel 041 5201731; www.gualti.it) are in an area that has maintained some of the color and bustle of the artisan district it once was. The gleaming white walls of the showroom shimmer quietly with the almost liquid light reflected from the gently oscillating resin filaments that are a feature of his work.
Each piece is meticulously crafted by hand, with the hot point of a needle used to bore and solder. Headpiece, armband, earrings, ring, soon ties as well: These are small sculptures that embrace motion and eschew symmetry. Color and form are reminiscent of the glorious blown-glass chandeliers traditionally made on the Venetian island of Murano. Yet the hand that reaches out to touch pale petals and leaves of such apparent fragility is shocked and then enchanted to discover a light, submissive medium that will not shatter or deform.
Though Gualti created some astounding headpieces for clients confident of making an impact at the recently inaugurated Venice Biennale, he will have nothing to do with the fashion houses keen to co-opt him into producing accessories for their designer collections. “No way! I would feel oppressed, just as I did in my teens.”
What does interest him is extending his experience to video and perhaps thereafter to the theater: the most natural development in a city that saw the birth of opera and whose every corner is a stage set.

Of course, a less unwitting evocation of Venice’s character comes from those who have swooned headlong into Venice’s gauzy, improbable flight from the fusty realities that shape the lives of other cities. Consider, for instance, the local merchant Gualti, the proprietor of a small but flamboyant jewelry boutique off the Campo Santa Margherita.
Gualti’s shop boasts a host of odd plastic-looking pendants, earrings and rings in various shades of purple. Purple, too, is the prose in the explanatory manifesto Gualti has mounted alongside his creations. It explains that the objects are indeed plastic — or, as Gualti puts it, “little polymeric jewels springing from the skilled hands of our amphitryon.”
And he’s just warming up. The jewels are evidently wraparound affairs that can shape-shift in any direction, to virtually any size: “Rings with anthropormorphic suggestiveness, bangles which surround the arm in an attempt to wrap the whole body, necklaces that capture the subject like spider webs and transform [it] into a complementary object. . . . Bodies, birds, collars, jewels — ornaments to dress a way of life that finds its natural status in Venice because in Venice one is masked all the time.”
As our faux Valley dude back in the bar might have said, “Whatever.” Yet, by the time we stumbled onto Gualti’s manifesto, we had to concede he had a point. For a city suspended on poles plunged into the floor of a lagoon, the mundane forces of place and time can seem as frivolous, shape-shifting and self-consciously silly as Gualti’s sculpture-jewelry. In the long sunset of its imperial decline, Venice had come to stake most of its identity on illusion. Somehow this reflection, like McCarthy’s image of the city as a folding picture-postcard, was oddly fortifying.

As was another: Among other things, the fond civic dreams of Venice, which have inspired enthusiasts from Titian and Tintoretto, Casanova and Henry James, Ruskin and Byron, on down through Gualti, can be an allegory of romantic love, another supranatural wonder constructed in defiance of the grim determinisms of environment and history, and crafted from presumptions ultimately no more outlandish than those behind Gualti’s wares.
It was a charming, consoling thought — and if nothing else, our sojourn in Venice taught us what a deceptively simple thing it is to be charmed. What more can you ask of a honeymoon?

Rio terà-canal: un indirizzo che più veneziano non si può (3111 di Dorsoduro per chi ama più l’esattezza che la poesia). A un passante distratto potrebbe sembrare il solito negozietto di vetri di Murano. Ma a Venezia ciò che appare non è. E per chi, curioso, vuole capire meglio di che cosa si tratti non resta che entrare in questa piccola wunderkammer, questa stanza delle meraviglie. Gualti – artefice, artista, artigiano – spiega quale sia la vera sostanza dei suoi gioielli: un materiale plastico, morbido, avvolgente, opalescente da cui nascono piccoli gioielli polimeri, espressioni plastiche che diventano espressioni artistiche, vere e proprie sculture da indossare. Anelli dalle suggestioni antropomorfe, bracciali che circondano l’avambraccio cercando di avvolgere tutto il corpo, collane come ragnatele che catturano tutta la persona trasformandola in oggetto di complemento assieme alle pietre, alle piume, ai tessuti imprigionati nella trama sottile dell’ordito. Chi cattura e chi è catturato? Difficile da spiegare. In parole povere si potrebbe dire che il gioiello diviene accessorio di moda, estroso, ironico, iperbolico. Eppure si tratta di oggetti leggeri, indossabilissimi pur nella loro intrigante capacità di avvolgere tutto il corpo e inglobarlo nella propria interiorità. Corpetti, reggiseni, indumenti gioiello per rivestire un modo di essere che a Venezia trova il suo status naturale: già, perché a Venezia si è sempre in maschera….. Così questi oggetti di plastica assumono la brillantezza del vetro, i colori dell’iride, la durezza del metallo. E indossati per una festa o per tutti i giorni, non cesseranno mai di stupire.

MASKED JEWELS
Rio terà-canal: you couldn’t ask for a more Venetian address (3111 Dorsoduro for prosaic precision). To the casual passer-by, it might seem to be just another shop selling Murano glass. But Venice is famed for seeming and not being. And for the more curious among us, there’s no other option than to enter this tiny “wunderkammer”, this room of marvels. Gualti – the owner, artist and craftsman – explains the true substance of his jewels: a plastic, soft, encircling and opalescent material used to make small “polymer” jewels, plastic forms becoming expressions of art, full-scale “dress” sculpture. Rings with anthropomorphic evocations, bracelets which surround the forearm while seemingly attempting to embrace the whole body, necklaces like cobwebs which capture the wearer, turned into an accessory just like hard stone jewels, boas, and fabrics imprisoned in the subtle weave. Who captures and who is captured? Difficult to explain. In mere words, one could say that the jewel becomes a fashion accessory, extrovert, ironic, hyperbolic. Yet these are flimsy objects and wonderful to wear despite their intriguing capacity of winding around the entire body, incorporating the wearer in their inward essence. Bustiers, bras, jewel-clothes, worn in as a way of life that finds its natural status in Venice: of course… Venice is always masked. These plastic articles take on the shine of glass, the colours of the iris, the hardness of metal. Worn everyday or only for parties, they never cease to surprise.
