I visited with my friend Gualti whose shop in Dorsoduro is a small white sanctuary. The brilliantly coloured wraps and jewels he creates make you elegant, no matter how you feel. It is he who said to me years ago, “the beauty is free.” LINK

La moda puede ser muchas cosas: elegante, estructurada, predecible. Pero desde la visión de Gualti, la moda es energía pura. Aquí no son solo prendas, son sensaciones. No son telas, son corrientes de aire atrapadas en movimiento. No son diseños, son emociones en estado puro.
Desde su atelier en Venecia, Gualti no sigue reglas, las desafía. Su trabajo no cabe en etiquetas ni en categorías conocidas. ¿Minimalismo? No, gracias. Que viva el dramatismo, la fluidez y una buena dosis de magia. Sus piezas no se visten, se fusionan con el cuerpo. Anillos que parecen tatuajes líquidos, collares que flotan como si tuvieran vida propia, brazaletes que no abrazan la muñeca, la envuelven en un baile hipnótico.
Y sus prendas… Son movimiento. La organza se retuerce, se expande, respira contigo. Los volúmenes no se quedan quietos, flotan, vibran, se sacuden con cada paso. Cada capa de tela es un trazo de arte tridimencional, cada silueta parece desafiar la gravedad. Es como si el viento se hubiera quedado atrapado en la tela y se negará a soltarla.
Aquí no hay estructuras rígidas ni líneas predecibles. Sus diseños existen en un punto intermedio entre el sueño y la realidad.
Sus piezas no están hechas para ser vistas, están hechas para sentirse. Un Gualti no se usa, te envuelve.

Ho comprato biglietti da visita composti a mano da Gianni Basso, che usa gli antichi torchi tipografici e non ha un’email, né un sito web. Indosso collane realizzate da Gualti, il cui negozio a Dorso- duro, con le creazioni ispirate alla natura, è un’oasi di tranquillità nell’incessante frastuono veneziano.

Venice: Bring On the Off-Season
An atelier called Gualti in the Dorsoduro section was nearly my undoing. Designer Gualti’s jewelry creations are drop-dead stunning. (Obviously, I didn’t have the right foil for the necklace to hand, but you get the idea.) His architectural wraps not only are gorgeous; they’re miracles of design ingenuity that can be arranged into all kinds of flattering, wearable art with the help of bead magnets so powerful I had to keep the two sets pretty far away from each other to photograph them. (Look closely to the left of the wrap.) Longer versions of the piece have shown up here and there as red-carpet looks for European opera stars.
I will make a point of visiting this shop every time I’m in Venice.

Al entrar en el minúsculo atelier en Venecia del maestro Gualti, veneradoy por las divas de la ópera, damas de la jet-set internacional y las “celebrities”, me siento un poco como “Alicia en el País de las Maravillas”, en una película antigua de David Linch, a la espera de que se abra el telón…Sin embargo ocurre todo lo contrario…Me sumerjo y floto en el cálido, transparente y gelatinoso liquido de un lírico y onírico universo paralelo, y allí en aquel pulcro y perfumado lugar de fantasía, me saludan con la fuerza de la ternura criaturas transparentes, multicolores, subterráneas y diáfanas inspiradas en la naturaleza… Veo formas caleidoscópicas y oigo el lenguaje del mundo vegetal sintiendo la inexorable e infinita fuerza poética de la naturaleza. Incluso llego a intuir el alma invisible de los objetos…
Cuenta la leyenda que Gualti tiene el poder de ver el color del alma de las personas y cosas.
Yo mientras tanto contemplo con asombro esculturas tridimensionales para engalanar el cuerpo, anillos receptores de luz, anillos violeta, broches con resplandor lunar, pulseras florales, sinuosos y plisados echarpes, chaquetas ondulantes, chaquetas mariposa, vaporosas bufandas de organza, anillos y prendedores flor de cactus, broches anémona de mar sin veneno, deliciosas gargantillas de bayas rojas, collares asimétricos y pistiliformes como cuchillos, pulseras sintéticas en forma de hoja pintadas a mano, esculturas a modo de chal, gargantillas lluvia de luz, broches flores del mar, iridiscentes anillos como nubes, anillos espejo años sesenta, anillos cinéticos llenos de movimiento, gargantillas huevos de rana, tocados florales para novias, bufandas con ingeniosas formas en espiral, bufandas medusa, raíces-escultura emergiendo desde lo más profundo…
Pulsera de fibra óptica diseñada para “El Monstruo de la Laguna”
Las creaciones de Gualti son minúsculas y ligeras como las alas de un escarabajo y pueden llegar a ser grandes y compactas como los pectorales de bustos egipcios. El corazón de las joyas tallos de luz es de cristal y sus latidos son como gotas de aguas emitiendo filamentos incandescentes…Las chaquetas asimétricas con mangas de murciélago se ajustan a la silueta perfectamente, convirtiéndose en vibrantes extensiones corporales llenas de vida propia, que son el resultado de las emociones del artista. Los prendederos se apoyan sobre la espalda como capullos medio abiertos. Los gorjales se cierran alrededor del cuello como húmedas corolas de flor bañadas por el rocío…Las micro y macro esculturas decoran el cuerpo femenino de forma clásica y minimalista. Las piedras preciosas toacio, ametista y safiro se revalorizan y materializan en forma de objeto joya y bisutería fina, uniendo el clasicismo con la modernidad.

A pesar de la aparente complejidad de sus esculturas y joyas, todas ellas son ponibles y sorprendentemente ligeras cuan plumas.
El creador Gualti (un triunfador, seguro de sí mismo, que pronto cumplirá los cuarenta y cinco años de edad), me saluda cordialmente despertándome de mi sueño hipnótico, narrándome la historia de su infancia:
‘De pequeño he sido un niño tímido, silencioso e introvertido y debido a mi sensibilidad extrema, me refugiaba en “mis mundos paralelos”, intentando encontrar instrumentos que permitiesen expresar mis emociones. Siempre permanecía alejado de mis coetáneos y compañeros de estudios, ya que detestaba los típicos juegos infantiles pareciéndome los mismos banales, violentos e inútiles. Me gustaba la soledad y me dedicaba a buscar tesoros entre el fango y las piedras. Los objetos luminosos sin valor, abandonados o perdidos por los adultos en las calles me fascinaban. Visitaba el bosque cercano a casa y permanecía abstraído en mis pensamientos oyendo el discurrir del riachuelo…observando su reflejo caleidoscópico hechizado por el embrujo de la danza de las algas sumergidas bajo la superficie cristalina. Adoraba examinar minuciosamente el proceso de germinación de las plantas y los detalles de cada micro-organismo y su manera de integrarse en el medio–ambiente. Uno de mis juegos favoritos era arrancar las plantas de raíz, ya que las mismas por sus formas extrañas fueron para mí autenticas. Hasta la fecha me sigue fascinando el mundo subterráneo y todo lo que está sumergido bajo tierra y puede sobrevivir en condiciones hostiles para despuntar a la superficie…Siempre he poseído la habilidad de ver más allá de las apariencias como si pudiese enlazar los hilos de filigrana del esoterismo, que hoy por hoy tengo la fortuna de expresar a través de mi arte, con los residuos de mi pasado, contaminándolas con los sucesos culturales del presente….
Crecí con ganas de explorar, buscar y comprender las cosas. Desde muy joven me interesaba la pintura y la escultura. En mi imaginario mundo realicé una exposición de raíces en una galería de arte, como si de auténticas joyas raras se tratase.
Toda creación mía es la muestra de mi interés hacia lo oculto, invisible y subterráneo. Mis criaturas etéreas con simbolismo de sus formas son como raíces que crecen… Me considero exigente y perfeccionista, pero a la vez soñador, ya que vivo y trabajo en una especie de limbo mágico.
Me gusta compartir mis emociones a través de la poesía simbólica que expresan mis creaciones, en un intento de solidificar la evanescente filigrana esotérica de la vida. De niño doblaba cucharas, cuchillos y tenedores para convertirlos en objetos decorativos.’
Escaparate de Gualti
Cuesta creer que el hombre simpático, inteligente y seguro de sí mismo fuese un niño tan introvertido. Gualti habla con la propiedad de los grandes oradores y maestros. Durante su infancia se sentía frustrado viviendo en un pueblo campestre a apenas 50 kilómetros de distancia de Venecia, encontrándose con la prohibición de sus progenitores de proseguir sus estudios en una escuela de arte y desarrollar sus talentos artísticos, ya que los mismos querían que trabajase en una fábrica. El recorrido profesional de Gualti fue un camino de espinas, hasta que vivió un encuentro mágico con un ángel en forma de mujer sofisticada y de mundo, que le empujó a abrir su propio espacio de trabajo…y desde el primer día de lo ocurrido pudo saborear las mieles del éxito en Venecia (ciudad de criaturas misteriosas, que habitan las aguas y los alrededores de la laguna). Ha diseñado espectaculares joyas escénicas para la gran diva de la opera Liesl Odenweller y adornó con sus esculturas al gran mito de la canción italiana Ornella Vanoni.El maestro tiene una relación de pareja desde hace más de dieciocho años que le aporta gran serenidad. La música es otra de las compañeras inseparables del artista, que le sirve de ayuda durante su proceso creativo. Le gustan: Rudy Adrian, Bruno Sanfilippo, Harold Budd, David Sylvian y adora el espectáculo “Sun Flower Moon” de los Momix.
Finalmente recuerdo que estoy en su “atelier” para realizarle una entrevista y le formulo las siguientes preguntas:
¿Cuál es la virtud que más respetas de las personas?
La transparencia. Me gustan las personas transparentes. Mis creaciones también lo son.
¿Cuál es tu color preferido?
El color de los antiguos alquimistas ha sido el negro. En cierto modo yo soy un alquimista y curiosamente casi siempre visto de negro, aunque mis creaciones sean muy coloridas.
¿Te gusta el director de cine Pedro Almodóvar?
Me encantan sus películas y sus decorados.
Hablando de cineastas italianos… ¿prefieres a Fellini o a Visconti ?
Me gusta mucho Fellini y el realismo de sus personajes.
¿Qué película te gustaría ver?
Estoy esperando el estreno de “Samsara“, que promete ser una película visualmente impactante. ”El Piano” y especialmente su escena más conocida me gusta mucho. Soy una persona que sabe apreciar los pequeños detalles de los objetos, las personas y de la vida.
¿Cómo es Venecia?
En la mágica Venecia todo es posible. Creo que me encontraría perdido en cualquier otra ciudad más grande. Yo me encuentro en sintonía y simbiosis con el ambiente de la ciudad. Antes de llegar a aquí me sentía como encarcelado. Lamentablemente en los últimos tiempos Venecia se ha vendido al consumo de masas y ya queda muy poco de aquel trabajo artesanal, por el que se hizo célebre.
¿Cuál es el sueño que te queda por cumplir?
Me quedan aún muchos sueños por cumplir, pero por superstición prefiero no desvelarlos, entre ellos está mi deseo de que me contraten para colaborar en alguna película.
¿Crees en la magia?
Sí. Definitivamente sí, tanto en la que nos hace bien como en la que nos hace mal. Incluso he sido victima de la magia negra en el pasado.
La alquimia es la madre de muchas ciencias. Un alquimista extrae las fuerzas de cualquier elemento orgánico después de un exhaustivo análisis del mismo. Uno de los más conocidos alquimistas de la historia ha sido el mago Merlín, ayudante del Rey Arturo. Gualti es un alquimista moderno, que conoce el poder, la fuerza, el simbolismo y las propiedades curativas de las plantas, raíces y frutos encontrados en la naturaleza. Cabe destacar, que cada objeto único de Gualti, tiene un cliente exclusivo. Debido al carácter personalizado de los objetos artesanales me sorprendió, que existiesen piezas para casi todos los bolsillos. Los pendientes más económicos valen 30 euros.
Una pieza de Gualti revaloriza cualquier prenda, porque aunque tus zapatos y vestido tengan muchos años y poco valor económico, dejándote analizar por el mago Gualti, él encontrara una criatura, que esté en perfecta sintonía con tu alma. Llevar una creación suya es casi como llevar un amuleto mágico, que nos ayuda a abrir las puertas de la alta sociedad y hacernos sentir bellas, especiales e únicas….Por muy fea que se sienta una mujer, con una escultura de Gualti se verá transformada por arte de magia en una mujer bella.
Sin embargo, a pesar de lo cierto de mis afirmaciones, llevar un objeto que se ajuste al color de tu alma implica mucho más que eso…Puede que signifique curar ciertas enfermedades, encontrar nuestra particular piedra filosofal e incluso la fuente de la juventud eterna.

GUALTI
Gualti opened his little studio for contemporary jewellery and ornaments in 1998. His workshop is a small Wunderkammer where unusual creations are arranged as a balancing act in a harmony of colors and forms, sometimes suspended in mid-air as if they were an art installation.
Gualti is a self-taught inventor of decorative shapes for the body. In his jewellery he uses many materials by mixing them through experimental techniques. He has a predilection for transparent and flexible materials such as nylon, acrylic elements, glass spheres and crystals beads.
His jewels are seemingly fragile but feather-light and easy to wear. Bracelets, earrings, brooches, collars, headpieces: the entire body is willingly captured, dressed, and transformed by these organic sculpture-jewels which he likes to call “extensions of the soul”. But in his creative universe he also loves to manipulate fabrics to create jackets, stoles and scarves with organza, satin, wool and anything else that can be wrapped around the body like a chrysalis cocoon.

Libro di Isabella Campagnol 2016
Gualti, nome d’arte dell’artigiano-artista Gualtiero Salbego, è un atelier che affascina. I sofisticati gioielli, realizzati in materiali insoliti come resine sintetiche mescolate all’alluminio colorato sbocciano in autentiche sculture da indossare, filamenti luminosi che disegnano anemoni di mare, collane raggiate, inusuali cerchietti per capelli e preziose broches. Particolarissime anche le stole plissettate che abbracciano i decolleté con soffici nuvole di seta, organza e taffetà.
