ยฟMinimalismo? No, gracias.

” DESIGN ED ELEGANZA, POTENZA E LEGGEREZZA : I GIOIELLI DI GUALTI “

Italian text: ” DESIGN ED ELEGANZA, POTENZA E LEGGEREZZA : I GIOIELLI DI GUALTI “

English text: ” ELEGANCE AND DESIGN, STRENGHT AND LIGHTNESS IN GUALTI’S JEWELS “

” ARTE Aย  VENEZIA : GUALTI E LE SUE CREAZIONI “

Carissimi ospiti, ecco a voi Gualti!

    Las macro-joyas by Gualti

Me encantan sus pelรญculas y sus decorados.

    Hablando de cineastas italianosโ€ฆ ยฟprefieres a Fellini o a Visconti ?

    ยฟQuรฉ pelรญcula te gustarรญa ver?

Crees en la magia?

Sรญ.

  • HAVE A GLASS IN VENICEย

    ” GUALTI’S DREAMY FAIRY TALE “

    by Stefania Gioia – March 9, 2018

Here the digital edition in English text

Graceful and flexible as a leaf of grass, light and evanescent as a floating bubble (he loves this similarity!), Gualtiero Salbego set foot in Venice, for the first time ever, in 1998, and since then he never left. At that time he was 26, and probably too shy to imagine his brilliant future as one of the finest artists in town.
Born and raised in a small village of Veneto countryside, Gualtiero lived in a family that considered job as a primary source and sent him to work right after the secondary school.
Artistically inclined, he got a job as a ceramist and spent the following 11 years employed in a factory where he couldnโ€™t nurture his passion as he should have.
Still, in the spare time the boy used to work on various, personal creations, drawn and inspired by the nature around him. Extremely fascinated by features of the earth such as leaves, roots, branches, fragile filaments, striped barks, fossils and stones, he was also mesmerized by any water creatures: colorful anemones and meandering algae became part of his vivid imagination and endless creativity.
Tired of keeping his restless soul in captivity and frustrated by his limiting job, with a big effort Gualtiero decided to go against his parentsโ€™ will and discover his own life path. A few months later his revolutionary breakthrough, he was arranging his first lab in Venice: a 9 square meters of freedom and grace.
Nowadays, entering Gualtiโ€™s atelier-gallery itโ€™s like walking into a white, fabolous Wunderkammer, where atypical jewels, along with fabric garnishments, are displayed in harmony with selected music and particular scents.
The artist thinks that these objects, being inspired by nature and destined to nature, should be chosen as instinctive extensions of the human body.
He believes his place, adorned with creations made of unusual materials such as synthetic resin, Swarovski crystal, nylon and aluminium, should be a soulsโ€™ meeting point. As a matter of fact, light and transparent, yet extraordinary resilient, these objects evoke the substance of the soul, which is aerial and unbreakable.
Jewels and accessories (although he hates this word, as none of his creations should be considered a complement, but an emotion!) can be customized according to the body and the personality of the client, who rarely leaves the atelier as a stranger. Surprised as I was, feeling the uncommon energy spread all over the place, I now just guess Gualtiโ€™s deepest secret resides in his short statement:
โ€œI feel blessed, since my job gave me the opportunity to live a fairy tale and turn to be what I was as a childโ€. A free, transparent, perfect creature.

Have a Glass in Venice is proud to include Gualti atelier-gallery in its Dorsoduro off the beaten path tour, thought for whoโ€™s willing to explore Venice’s deep essence.

    ” Local artisans & shopping “

    Discover the best Venetian workshops

In Venice you can find Artisans Shops and Artists Ateliers that hand down the local traditions since centuries. The artisanal sector is very active in the territory of Venice, thus we suggest itineraries to deviate from the usual tourist routes to the narrow city streets, where you will discover shops with authentic and original products from the Italian manufacturing tradition.

    Gualti
Among the narrow streets of the Dorsoduro district lies a hidden boutique that, like a treasure chest, contains the magical riches of Gualtiero Salbego, known by the nom dโ€™art Gualti. Entering his shop is an experience that profoundly affects the visiter with a triumph of colours and re-fined designs. Brooches like emerging flowers, chokers like waterfalls with bright filaments and earrings like sea anemones, these are some of Gualtiโ€™s wearable sculptures; jewellery collections inspired by natural forms. The Gualtiโ€™s works come to life on the woman who wears them, and therein lies the surprise. The apparently fragile jewellery turns out to be an illusion: everything is designed to be worn. The very special materials range from mixed synthetic resins to coloured aluminium. Gualtiโ€™s fairy tale is beautiful, whereby his passion and creativity materialise into shapes and unique and original jewellery.

    GUALTI
Gualti opened his little studio for contemporary jewellery and ornaments in 1998. His workshop is a small Wunderkammer where unusual creations are arranged as a balancing act in a harmony of colors and forms, sometimes suspended in mid-air as if they were an art installation.
Gualti is a self-taught inventor of decorative shapes for the body. In his jewellery he uses many materials by mixing them through experimental techniques. He has a predilection for transparent and flexible materials such as nylon, acrylic elements, glass spheres and crystals beads.
His jewels are seemingly fragile but feather-light and easy to wear. Bracelets, earrings, brooches, collars, headpieces: the entire body is willingly captured, dressed, and transformed by these organic sculpture-jewels which he likes to call โ€œextensions of the soulโ€. But in his creative universe he also loves to manipulate fabrics to create jackets, stoles and scarves with organza, satin, wool and anything else that can be wrapped around the body like a chrysalis cocoon.

I materiali particolarissimi spaziano dalle resine sintetiche mescolate fra loro allโ€™alluminio colorato. Bracciali, anelli, orecchini, collari, headpiece, diventano cosรฌ estensioni del corpo. รˆ proprio cosรฌ:

” VENICE ART AND CRAFTS “

And right between Campo S.Margherita, one of the liveliest places of the city (especially in summer, thanks to high concentration of cafรฉs and restaurants with outdoor tables) and the nearby Campo S.Barnaba, there is a shop-atelier of Gualti, whose real name is Gualtiero Salbego, “experimenter of matter”, as he defines himself.
After training as a ceramist, during which he had never stopped creating various objects using also wood and metals, in 1990 he discovered a material usually used for industrial purposes: it’s to do with synthetic resin, supple and therefore mouldable, that has the transparency and lightness of glass but not its fragility.
Thanks to this material, originally poor but becoming precious with manufacture and combination with glass and crystal details, then hand painted, Gualti starts to create these necklaces, almost small sculptures but which seem endowed with life (in fact, he calls them “creatures”): brooches as leaves or flowers with long threads, necklace as a waterfall of filaments or roots, earrings as anemone vibratiles, which at close look reveal a microcosm rich in details: the “heart” of the jewel is almost always in glass or crystal, that a below layer of silver makes luminous and iridescent like an eye.
All in this innocent and welcoming space seems to be in continuous becoming: even the brick walls within sight, slowly crumbled by time, or the wooden beams on the ceiling, all speak about ceaseless change of natural world.
In addition to necklaces, Gualti has recently started to produce also some accessories, always characterised by his unmistakable style: silk scarves where the fabric remains almost imprisoned by filaments of resin and evening shoes in crepe or satin silk handcrafted following his drawing, often adorned with a small jewel.

      Jewels of Venice

Venice is one of my five favorite cities in the world. I first went to Venice as a teenager, on a school trip with the Dominican nuns. I was entranced by the canals and beauty of meandering through the streets and waterways. When I returned years later, I once again lost myself in the twists and surprises of the floating city. As I walked, looking at shops full of masks, costumes, art, I went past an enchanting shorefront filled with a different kind of jewelry โ€“ modern, light, romantic. I lunched with friends in the nearby piazza of Santa Margherita (happily devoid of tourists) and came back to browse. My boyfriend (now husband) struck up a conversation with Gualti who created all the fabulous jewelry. I left with my first piece, a necklace, and every time we went back for the Venice Biennale, I added to my collection. Gualti even made me my own special headpiece for my wedding. I asked Gualti to write about his passion for this monthโ€™s art theme. If ever you find yourself in Venice, meander over to see him.

      GUALTI
Supposing Peggy Guggenheim with her family of loyal four-legged friends hadn’t moved to another – happier – art scene, she probably would have bought everything on offer at the small Gualti shop. What’s more, the designer would have certainly joined the selected group of her favourites; it would be his surreal jewellery the patroness would choose for her bohemian parties on the terrace of Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. The small, completely white shop is nothing short of a dream oasis: jewellery sculptures made of resins and whatever high-tech materials Gualtiero Salbego have found suitable for the material manifestations of his creative dreams; brooches, rings, necklacesโ€ฆ Light as air and transparent, they seem capable of floating in the air. And yet the seeming fragility is but an illusion; the jewellery is actually quite tough and resilient. The artist describes the surreal, nature-inspired shapes as an extension of the limited human body. Shawls and capes are recent additions to the Gualti collection: sculptural works of art of accordion pleated taffeta or organza – or a boiled wool cape interspersed with tiny steel wires reminiscent of the lagoon waves or a giant jellyfishโ€ฆ The collection features silk evening shoes (available for individual ordering).

      Sculptures to be worn

An artistic object must not reproduce the visible, but rather reveal the invisible. (LDD).

Veniceโ€ฆwith her gentility, with her architecture, with her light, with her beguiling charm, with her artโ€ฆeverything has already been saidโ€ฆand yetโ€ฆamidst the hustle and bustle of the quarter of Dorsoduro, near Campo Santa Margherita, near the Ponte Dei Pugni, a small secluded cellar seems to beckon to us – the captivating and sophisticated shop window of Gualti.
Unusual creations are displayed in contrasting equilibrium. An art installation that, in an exquisite harmony of colour and form, represents the artistic quest of a young talent.
The atelier is entirely white, a sort of limbo, a cosy “wunderkammer” where the air emanates poetry and creativity.
In this mystical alcove enveloped in a rarefied atmosphere, almost suspended in time, emerge the surreal and spectacular sculptures of Gualti. They are sculptures that envelop the body. Sculptures to be worn A sort of fascinating universe of enchanting splendour, difficult to describe with words because art is a language in and of itself, an intense sensation, cosmic desire, sentiment of the soul.

Gualti, a youthful thirty seven-year-old originally from Padua, moved to Venice in September of 1998 to inaugurate his atelier-galleria following a long, tortuous, and sensitive evolution. He is self-taught, a “material experimenter”, an inventor of decorative forms for the body, who abandoned himself to the creativity that passionately consumes his entire existence. Since childhood, his extreme sensitivity has left him in awe when faced with the grandeur of Nature. The places of his adolescence strongly influenced the young Gualti: he would admire small rivulets of water tripping along in myriad kaleidoscopic reflectionsโ€ฆhe would observe the sinuous dance of silvery algae gracefully suspended in that mysterious crystalline surface while their harmonious movement would work an almost hypnotic spellโ€ฆhe would absorbingly examine the delicate buds of plantsโ€ฆscrutinize every detail of tiny teeming creatures and their interaction with the physical environment around themโ€ฆthe world behind the superficiality of reality enchants himโ€ฆHe is particularly attracted to everything that is beneath the surface: small fossils, twigs, stones, and above all rootsโ€ฆtangled, woody, branched, fibrous, tubers, sometimes aerial or creepingโ€ฆHe is fascinated by small anthropomorphic apparatus and their organic formsโ€ฆ

This crossroads of interests and visions gave rise to the creative odyssey of the man-artist Gualti.
And it is precisely from the secrets of the atmospheric and botanical environment throbbing with life that Gualti gives birth to abstract forms. Nothing is by chance.
Through creativity and awareness he creates atypical ornaments that second the body.
His creations are born from within his own soul like roots rising up from deep within. The atypical creative forms โ€“ Sculptures to be worn โ€“ are his very emotions lived with intensity, knowledge, and awareness, with love and with regal creativity. They are mysterious, guarded in a sort of precious treasure chest and, when materialised, bring his experience back through time to life.
When Gualti speaks of his creations, he basks in his own memories: โ€ฆthis is a cathartic need for me, in addition to being a sort of mission, manifesting my past sensations to be able to share them by granting my personal interpretation of those “luminescent reflections of burgeoning images” through the realisation of my “ethereal creatures”โ€ฆthey are part of my entire existence, of my way of beingโ€ฆ of living and working in serenityโ€ฆthe contemplation of beauty enraptures meโ€ฆ
Each of his works stands testimony to his reverence of the Ego, for the Unconscious, for that which is the sublimation of beingโ€ฆGualtiโ€ฆI abandon myself to emotions and urgesโ€ฆ it is a joy for me to render those moments of particular emotional intensity tangibleโ€ฆmake the invisible visibleโ€ฆit’s like seeking to solidify the evanescent esoteric filigree of Natureโ€ฆmelding the organic and inorganicโ€ฆtransforming the dream into realityโ€ฆ

A demanding perfectionist, he is always seeking new stimuli and forms that second his creative evolution. Gualtiโ€™s ornaments never betray aesthetics, but always and in any case evoke grand formal elegance. They are born of the equilibrium of free creativity. They are spontaneous, radiant, harmonious atypical expressions that emerge from a sweet spiritual serenity. In each of his jewels he seeks โ€œthe sense of lightnessโ€, using particularly unusual materials, assembled and fused with an extraordinary vision, always experimenting in a new, magical, and unique idiomโ€ฆ

Gualti is a visual poet who illuminates the ontological nature of his perceptive explorations.

Jewels and ornaments in a rainbow spectrum, apparently fragile or difficult to wearโ€ฆbut in reality as supple and lightweight as feathers. They are extensions of lifeโ€ฆto be savoured every instant of every day, and can be touched and worn casually, but certainly without going unobservedโ€ฆGlassy hearts pulsating with light like watery mirrors, from which transparent filaments and iridescent tips reach out โ€“ offshoots of light โ€“ as Gualti defines them. The pins rest on shoulders like fanciful flowers just blossomedโ€ฆ.the pendants caress necklines like shimmering drops of waterโ€ฆthe swirls of vibrant filaments encircle necks like sparkling rings of pearly dewโ€ฆrigid chokers shoot forth long and sinuous pistils like exotic tropical blooms blowing in a sea breezeโ€ฆBraceletsโ€ฆringsโ€ฆearringsโ€ฆcollars
โ€ฆheadpiecesโ€ฆthe entire body is willingly captured, dressed, and transformed by these organic sculpture-jewels that Gualti defines as extensions of the body. They are indefinable architectures, timeless in alternating lights, shadows, colours, volumes, asymmetries, and movementโ€ฆThe universe of Gualti continues with the creation of his stolesโ€ฆ : Silksโ€ฆorganzaโ€ฆ taffetas,โ€ฆand anything else that can be wrapped around the body like a cocoonโ€ฆOriginal plissรฉ of iridescent fabrics crumples surprisingly, enhanced by voluminous sinuous hems that form spirals evoking diaphanous creatures of unexplored abyssesโ€ฆ.His jewellery can be minute and ethereal like the mottled wings of a scarab or sumptuous like Egyptian jewelsโ€ฆliquid like the stuff of dreamsโ€ฆthey can move, dance, caress, jingleโ€ฆeach living its own life.
Every creation is unique – absolutely original.
A work of art. Sculptures to be worn

Gualti transforms his deepest emotions, his dreams, his fantasies, and desires into ornaments for the body and soulโ€ฆa sort of perpetual voyage in time and space, where there is no beginning and no end, but rather a continual evolution that seeks and affirms its โ€œsensationsโ€.
He explores paths of refined stylistic perfection that transcend the object and project it towards the symbolic value of a gift with no return, towards the discovery of new poetics that then enriches, once again, the secret treasure chest of dreams.

Travel Material: From Venice to New York
      By George M. Beylerian

      Artists have a particularly
visceral approach to material experimentation. George Beylerian witnessed this first hand during his travels to the 53rd Venice Biennale earlier this year. He reports from Venice on the spectacular forms he discovered by two artists, GUALTI and Federica Marangoni, whose passion for materials drives their respective bodies of work in very different ways.

Travel Material: Notes from the Venice Art Biennale
      By George M. Beylerian

      GUALTI: Shoots of Light
In the heart of Dorsoduro is a white jewel box – hardly a 12′ x 12′ space, filled with the most delicate, attractive jewels of body ornaments. These jewels, however, are not made of gold or gemstones; they are actually made by the magical hands of GUALTI (Guatiero Salbergo) fashioned from nylon filament threads-resin acts as his “basic material”. The result is pure magic! The ornaments are collar wraps, from small to extravagant, collar and wristbands that flutter into graceful and butterfly shapes, pleated and delicate in vibrant colors. Resin acts as his ‘base’ with nylon filament threads which reflect his childhood memories of pulling out roots from the soil as artforms. He
creates “shoots of Light” as extension of the body. The sensibility in his fingers indicate childhood and adolescence work experience, when at 13, he started work in a laboratory of an artist/ ceramist in Capodimonte. At 18 he developed a passion for wearables, always manipulating shapes, curves and playing with “elasticity” as the extension of his craft. He explains that his work is not fashion, but art. His “expressive needs” are mirrored in his work through form and color. In other words GUALTI creates magic through his sense of color, shapes, curves, forms and the subtlety of it all! A true magician of shapes and colors!

Inspired by various forms of vegetation, Italian designer Gualti dreamed up these surrealist, organic-symbolic extensions of the human body in the form of jewels. The extravagant earrings are designed to resemble certain flowers and the roots of plants rising up from deep within.

“I have always been attracted by what lies beneath the surface of reality,” says Gualti. “The roots of plants, whose forms fascinate me and capture my emotive sides.”

“I create the way I breathe, my pieces project my feelings. The ornaments born of my hands become extensions for the body, seeds reflecting the personality of their wearer.”

He has a very poetic way with words, a sure sign that art flows through all elements of his life.

One side plays host to jewelry-sculptures made of resin, fiber-optic cable, and any other material that the creative and poetic imagination of Salbego has seen fit to make use of, a mass of brooches, pendants, bracelets, and necklaces; the other displays a single style of court pump: 1 made to measure in satin silk, available within a month in eighty-five colors, with, on request, a clutch to match.

A brooch by Gualti, young artist who creates, through a mixture of materials, rare jewels, with a heavenly and colored look, which seem an explosion of fireworks. Smalls sculptures seemingly fragile but actually pliable, light like feath ers and easy to wear.

It’s hard to classify the many activities of Gualtiero Salbego. Like an amphitryon he comes out from behind the cheese cloth curtain of his laboratory to present his colourful creations in a small showroom (minimal white). His jewellery goes beyond ornamentation and fashion; in the city of glass, his creations have pulsing glass hearts with iridescent, highly technological end pieces hanging on nylon threads: broaches, earrings or necklaces, representative of those who wear them. Organicity and lightness are also typical of his stoles and reversible shawls (sculptures around a body), his shoes and pochette handbags. Details are behind the success of his unusual window creations and floral designs.

Gualti is one of the new wave of Venetian artists and craftsmen. And what a wave! What this man does is somewhere between art and craft and represents the best of both. He works in resin, glass, and nylon to create what can only be described as wearable sculpture. His works have the lightness and delicacy of glass, yet are pliable. Gualti says he sees them as extensions of the wearer’s body. I only wish I thought my body were beautiful enough to extend into anything like these earrings and necklaces, headpieces and shoe ornaments. They are like exotic sea anemones, or sometimes flowers or leaves, extending tendrils from a tiny central point-sometimes an eye or a “pool of water”-that frequently is made of glass crystal. The tendrils of his brooches, especially, cascade over the wearer’s shoulder like a fabulous corsage. The colors are rich, and each piece is crafted by hand with the point of a hot needle used to bore and solder. Gualti not only creates exuberant shoe ornaments, but hand dyes
the handmade silk shoes to match them. The latest addition to the art of Gualti is an array of fabulous wraps and some breathtakingly gorgeous jackets. All come in his wonderful colors-and most are reversible. The wraps and jacket collars are malleable into undulations and peaks as suits thewearer’s fancy. Truly this is unique, wearable art.

Italian American Magazine by Mazzanti Editori
      Dicembre/December 2006

      For a Gift…from the Heart

THERE ARE PRESENTS AND THEN THERE ARE PRESENTS THAT YOU CAN RECEIVE AS A SIGN OF AFFECTION OR THAT YOU CAN BUY YOURSELF AS A SYMBOL OF PERSONAL SUCCESS. THERE ARE OBJECTS WHICH GO BEYOND THEIR SIMPLE MONETARY VALUE (NOT ONLY IN THE SENSE THAT “THEY ARE PRICELESS”) BECAUSE THEY REPRESENT AN INTIMATE DATE WITH THE HISTORY OF THE PLACE WHERE THEY ARE RECEIVED, WITH THE CREATIVITY OF THE ARTIST WHO CREATES THEM AND WITH THE NATURE OF THE MATERIAL WITH WHICH
      THEY ARE MADE.

In Venice, where the practice of selling, and selling yourself a bit in the process, is still observed, there are, fortunately, some happy isles upon which business in the soul has not surrendered to mass commercialism. There are objects which leave the world of the souvenir and enter the world of preciousness, uniqueness and good taste; there are shops which have chosen to remain intimate and genuine workshops in which craftsmen appear in leather aprons one day with work- worn hands then fly to New York the next to sell their “jewels.”

Let us continue and move on to the costume jewelry where we enter into two workshops where young owners/artists put their outstanding imagination to the service of light, art, and materials, realizing exquisite jewels and ornaments for the body.
The unstable, curvy, iridescent and vibrant creations of one of these young artists accompany the numerous elegant Venetian and foreign clients along an imaginary path of stylistic perfection, which tends to move away from the object towards its symbolic value. Pins, chokers, bracelets and hat pieces are all born from his passion for nature and for everything that is hidden under the appearance of what is real (roots, shoots, stamen, filaments, pistils) and for this reason they are created using a synthetic resin, soft and delicate and very fragile in appearance.

Perhaps it is actually true: in every object you can find the heart of a city. L.D.S.

      VENEZIA
Let’s start this 2006 blog edition of Contessanally with this heavenly “firework display” of unusual sculpture-jewelry from Gualti’s tiny boutique/atelier just off the trendy Campo Santa Margherita. “My creations are unique, with fluid movements like an organic poem. The reflections and the vibrations of the resins mixed with a central piece of glass give light and a taste of eternity, where time vanishesโ€ฆ..” Gualti explains. These bijoux evoke intense emotions and a brooch or an Elizabethan inspired ruffled collar/necklace will dress up any little black dress or jacket. They are extremely chic as the grand dames who wear them, like Dodi Rosekrans, who is famous for her masked balls in Palazzo Brandolini. In fact it is by “word of mouth” in a palazzo or a salotto that one discovers these divine surreal pieces. I suggest that if you are not bold or confident enough to wear one of these pieces, that you go and also look at the cloth wrap-around-wraps mounted on steel wires that recall the waves of the lagoon or the felt “octopus” inspired “scarves”. For sure, Peggy Guggenheim would have taken Gualti under her wing, bought out the whole collection and dedicated a show to this talented artist.

Inventing jewels is a little like drawing dreams: their shapes sparkling with lights and reflected colours spring from creativity which for Gualti is natural and stem from the marvels of the unconscious. Gualti lends the greatest freedom to fantasy but he always dreams on the fact that his “wearable sculptures”, very precious apparel, must adhere to a person. The young artist, in point of fact, considers each “piece” an “extension of the body” or “a poem to enrich the treasure box of dreams”.

Less traditional, and certainly eclectic, is the 12 Gualti, Rio Terร  Canal, near Campo Santa Margherita, (39-041) 520-1731, www gualti.it, which sells modern space-age brooches shaped like star bursts, manufac tured in colored resin that appears brittle but is pliable and soft.
